#594 Save a life...

In my last post, I was talking about how we all need love at some time in our life. Our animals are not alone in this regard. Even though I am holding a SL cat, In America, according to the ASPCA, we call it RSPCA in Australia, a mere 37% of cats who enter American animal shelters are adopted. Less than 5% reunite with their families. The remaining cats are euthanized. Feral, shy, sick, scared, injured, old, pregnant mom cat’s, mom’s with newborn kittens and orphaned kittens are generally euthanized in animal shelters.  We can do better. We can save more lives. It takes us all working together, each doing our part to make a difference. No action is too small.

Whether you adopt your pets from local animal shelters and rescues or foster a pet you are helping to improve the above dismal statistics. You are making a difference. Below are four actions that can make a difference and that you can do from the comfort of your own home and get some exercise while you at it.

1. COLLECT ALUMINUM CANS
Collect aluminum cans, save them up and cash them in. Donate the funds you make to your local animal rescue/shelter to help save more lives. If there is a specific pet in need at the shelter (i.e. special needs cat who needs funds for a surgery), you can donate towards the cause.

2. DONATE NEW OR GENTLY USED TOWELS AND BLANKETS
Animal shelters and rescues can always use new or gently used towels and blankets. Blankets and towels are used to line pet carriers (when traveling to and from the veterinarian or to their adoption). Blankets and towels are also appreciated by the pets waiting for adoption, as while they wait they can have a soft place to snuggle up on and call their own. So rather than throw out that old clean towel, why not donate towards an animal shelter.

3. TAKE SHELTER DOGS TO LOCAL DOG PARK WITH BANDANNAS
Organize a small group of volunteers to walk the shelter/rescue dogs at a local park once a week. Each week, have the adoptable dogs wear their “Adopt Me” bandannas on your walks. This is a great way to provide much needed exercise for the dogs and increase exposure to the community- of dogs in need of homes. You’ll increase adoptions and provide an enjoyable walk for the dogs at the same time and have some fun while you’re at it.

4.  VOLUNTEER 1X/WEEK/FORTNIGHT/WEEKEND
The key is to volunteer on a regular basis or at least when you can. What does your local animal shelter or rescue need? Do they need help with cleaning cages, or someone to hold the cats for a while at the shelter, perhaps even someone to walk the dogs? Find out what they need and make a plan to help. Set a date and time to come each week or fortnight, or when you can, and spend time with the animals. Not only will you be making a difference by lifting the spirits of the pets who are waiting for adoption, you can increase adoptions by taking photos while volunteering and sharing them on your social media pages and with your friends, family and co-workers. Spread the word that you’re volunteering and invite others to join you and to come to the shelter to adopt. It all helps.

#591 I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones....

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones (from Albert Einstein).

Einstein stated: “I have always condemned the use of the atomic bomb against Japan.” Five months before his November 1954 death, he explained “one great mistake in my life…when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made…" Separately he said: "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." Some of his quotes included saying “Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.” “It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder, using force always attracts men of low morality.”  “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”

Whilst we generally can’t stop a world war, our inaction however, often allows evil to flourish. Taking action can be dangerous as well, time consuming, tedious, and a real pain in the neck, but it is the thing that is most effective at minimizing the danger and evil in the world. So why is action important?   Action is what gets things done. Inaction means nothing gets done. Action, in the case of this quote, is about doing things to thwart, retard or deter the evil acts of others. The actions necessary to thwart evil acts is probably the most dangerous and the rarest. Such as breaking up a fight, scaring off a robber (or worse), these are actions of extreme bravery. It is an action the evil-doer is not expecting, as it is so rarely done. For example: - How many of you know of someone that is being abused by their partner, ex, bashed even and have done nothing.

The actions necessary to retard or deter evil acts are what most of us can do most easily, and with little to no risk. These might include joining a neighbourhood watch group, keeping your neighbourhood clean, well-lit, and unappealing to thieves, or in the case of the abuse reporting the absue so the person can get help. You can always remain anonymous. There are lots of things one can do to help in the eternal fight against evil, and to make the world less dangerous. Unfortunately evil is everywhere, and the wolf is always at the door.

What are you willing to do to make your part of the world less dangerous, and to help diminish the evil in your back yard? It won’t be easy, but I believe it will be worth the effort.

#589 I look for answers...If I don't laugh and smile there is fear of howling like a baby.

These last few weeks I've been dealing with some pretty intense fears. I'm not afraid to admit that I'm only human and fear rears it’s ugly head in my life too. Whilst every post I try and be positive for you all, today my fear has taken hold and I wanted to share.

Way back I mentioned that my mother was suffering from severe dementia and well she's a stubborn woman if I must say and wasn't meant to last past Christmas. Two Christmas later, it happens again and the call goes out to the family that her body is shutting down. Again now we are in April and she fighting with all her life but still whenever we make plans (those plans), she fights with all her strength...

Whilst my mother is available to see not like some of my friends who have lost their loved ones, I look at my mother who is now blind, tell her that I love her, hold her hand, wipe her face, kiss her head, and tell her I am always by her side. My mother you see is my heart. I share stories and even though she nods, I am not sure she understands who I am and what I am saying to her. Mum did everything for me and did it well. I never looked for anything, I had the best upbringing, and without her love I wouldn't be the same as I am now. In saying that my mother she can't talk, she can't feed herself, she can't wash herself, she has no independence and gives the nurses hell. I guess I would do the same.

My fear apart from losing her.. I now have another shock of fear and that is my father now has been diagnosed with dementia, and his dementia is progressing quite rapidly. My father is in the same position my mother was in a few years back. To explain my father is my rock. I have accepted my mother's dementia and whilst the tears flow every time I see her, I am in complete shock that the doctors – specialists now state my father has moderate dementia as well and will need to go to a home now. I honestly can't cope.

Well, I've noticed a few things about fear over the last few weeks. The first thing is our reluctance to feel it. There is so MUCH god-damn resistance and dogma around fear. First up, it’s pretty much viewed as a sign of weakness if you admit to anyone that you’re scared or experiencing fear. I never call out for help myself, and admit that I broke down last week at work when i heard the news from the doctors.

Yet we ALL feel it. No one wants to admit it, so we bury it away and deny it’s own very existence. The problem with that is – the more you hide it, the stronger it gets. Fear for me is my life changing a direction I can't control. My father being the hero in my life, my heart wants to explode as I hear him stumble for words and memory loss quite significant, repeating his stories over and over again. When all I want to do is scream, shake him and tell him to wake up. I went through these emotions with my mother and eventually accepted it. I know I can't do any of the above to Dad, so I hold back the tears when I see him, only to howl like a baby that I now have two parents that need care and whilst my mother does not know who I am and hasn't for quite some time, my fear takes hold will I ever be able to accept my father not recognizing me in a few months.. My fear in this case is shock. Denial that life can be this mean. Understanding to overcome this fear I have to be strong, but will I be able to cope with the change that is most definitely coming....

#554 Savouring the alone time...

The great omission in life is solitude; not loneliness, for this is an alienation that thrives most in the midst of crowds, but that zone of time and space free from outside pressure which is the incubator of the spirit. -- Marya Mannes, author and critic..

A few weekends ago, I realized I had spoken to approx. eight people that whole weekend.
Sounds pretty tragic actually… The people were my nephew who was visiting, two friends I had known for years, two friends on Second life, the young girl at the checkout admiring my bracelet on my arm as she talked about her plans for the weekend when she gets off shift, the pizza boy that treated my PMS moments and brought my awesome meat lovers pizza, and lastly the nosey neighbor telling me that my lawns are getting long and need a trim. P.S – (Thoughts about the old biddy, That’s if the bloody rain decides to ease off in the afternoons and the heat of 40’c temperatures give me some peace so I can go out and mow the lawns)....Curses the old bat that has nothing else to do but whine.

From the Friday night until Sunday night I did not have any parties to go to, friends to meet or family to attend to. I turned off my IPhone Saturday morning after talking to my friends and my only company was a blaring iPod dock and me dancing around cleaning the house to the music. I was not sick, depressed or left at a loose end by friends who all had other plans. In fact, I was invited to the movies by both friends, even invited out for dinner, and asked to the movies twice, but declined politely as all  I wanted to do was just chill and do nothing. This is not a new experience for me.

As a child sometimes I used to ask my mother to tell friends I was in the shower when they called, and as a twenty-something I would turn down offers to go to music festivals or skiing at weekends because, after a long week at work, the last thing I wanted to do was to be around people, especially back then when all I did was on the phones talking to people.

I’ve noticed as I got older my solitary tendencies sometimes seem to get worse. For e.g.: If I go for a walk with a friend to the local markets, I can be around people for say a couple of hours, but at the end I am tired and tetchy, aggressive at the mum’s that don’t know how to push a trolley and bang into your ankles, and all I want to do sometimes is run to the car and head back home. I have no patience for crowds!!.

My friends accept me as I am, and sometimes think “she’s having one of those days’, if you’re not willing to be in touch with people 24 hours a day by tweets, texts or at dinner parties, you’re viewed with suspicion.

I love what I call my Blissing’ Out moments. I could enjoy a whole weekend sometimes not talking to anyone if it was possible. I laugh sometimes I see people posting on Facebook and showcasing a post of a country house that seems to be in the middle of nowhere with no Wi-Fi, no computer and people say could you live there?. My answer in less than a second would be ABSOLUTELY!!. Solitude. The silence. The expansion. That deep, deep feeling of freedom, of course I would live there. For how long I don’t know, but would love the complete feeling of relaxation.  I think it is my intense desire for self-exploration and expansion that drives my love of solitude.  Being alone I am forced to deal with whatever feelings are surfacing within me instead of constantly being stimulated by other people or things. It is in sitting with these feelings and accepting them that I have come to understand, appreciate and love myself more.

Don’t ever be afraid to just be on your own. Sometimes we all need this time just to love what we do and why we are here.

#388 Remembering the Year that was, with Faun, Moon, Haikei and Bauhaus Movement

Sometimes it is hard to look back and remember a year that has passed. You think to yourself, what have I done, what have I achieved, what new years resolution did I make and fail. So many thoughts go through your head when you celebrate on the clock at midnight on the 31st December of each year.
When you look back and hear all the famous stars that have passed on, you think life is going way too fast. Remembering stars such as:
  • Robin Williams - will comedy ever be the same again?
  • Joe Cocker - the romance and husky songs that man could sing, So sad, cancer has affected another. Will they ever find a cure?
  • Shirley Temple - Child star that was ever so sweet and those curls :)
  • Gough Whitlam - Our lovely old Prime Minister and what he achieved.
  • Ann Davies - The delightful star from the Brady Bunch, Brady Bunch always remembers the maid.
  •  Phillip Hughes - Such a tragic loss, our young Australian cricketer.
  • Charlotte Dawson - Fashion and modelling worlds have shone a little less brightly ever since the passing of Charlotte Dawson.
  •  Oscar de la Renta - We mourned this awesome fashion designer and so many others.
Sharing with you all those that will never be forgotten.
