#946 The Green Patch..

Delicious seasonal goodness meets pure culinary passion at the Patch, where the chefs explore the natural connections between kitchens, gardens and a space to unwind.  According to the seasons, Patch produces a frequently changing fresh, wholesome, and enticing menu, which is locally sourced locally wherever possible.

Patch caters for people with intolerances and has something on the menu to appeal to most, including children.
Patch’s warm and modern renovation was designed by Mischa to reflect simpler days through quirky references to things you would find in your grandfather’s shed, complete with its timber racks, assorted tools and pot plants, books to read whilst you sit with a coffee/tea as you soak up the sun. The Patch team feel honoured to be responsible for this next chapter in the life of this building originally designed by Cinoe and see it as a hub for the community, where people gather to relax, connect, and enjoy.
Remember though social distancing at this time is always required!.

#679 Sensory spaces..

I have come to associate the arrival of spring with the fragrance of Lilac and Lavender and I fall under its spell. I love this time of year when the lilacs bloom. The lilac bush in my front garden is in its prime, and every time that I walk by on the way to or from my front door, the air is filled with its intoxicating scent, and keep it around my house, in my lounge room and bedroom.  Did you know that environmental scents are used to promote physical and psychological health. Potential sources of restorative odours in the urban environment are sometimes grouped into four categories; Fresh air (Wind and Airflow), trees and plantings, water and waterways, and pleasing aromas from non natural sources.

The aromas such as basil, thyme, mint, lilac and lavender are intoxicating to me and I have heard that it is shown to be helpful in reducing headaches and inflammation and in improving sleep, digestion and blood circulation.

The olfactory gland is to blame for our love of scents, it pulls at the heartstrings of our memories and emotions and in the olden days our taste buds.

#532 There's peace even in the storm

November to me is just one step away from Christmas, and Christmas being like a storm. As the clouds turn grey and dark so do my stress levels. Well for once I am saying enough!!. I will not have a stressful Christmas this year and everyone can help out.. so i say puffing up my chest and screaming at the top of my lungs. So be it I say.. (oh help!!).

It is possible to go from stressed to blessed, to create a simpler, more joyful Christmas this year. So I am going to follow these ten Grinch-busting tips and you’ll slide from overwhelmed to overjoyed faster than you can shout “God bless us all, everyone!”

1. Lower expectations: Don’t fall for the hype and myth-takes that can ruin your holiday. You’ll  make yourself crazy comparing your home, your holiday, your family, with anyone or anything that makes you feel less than perfect. Stop trying to win the perfect holiday award for the best cookies, the most elaborate decorations, or the biggest gifts. Remember these four important words throughout the holiday season: Do less, enjoy more.

2. Change routines: Why do we feel that we must continue forever to do things just as we’ve always done them? Don’t be bound by past traditions. Think outside the box and consider new ways of doing things to make it easier on yourself.
o   Instead of exchanging gifts with co-workers or extended family, how about choosing a charity to help?
o   Who says you HAVE to cook a huge meal for 30 people every year? Groan, Could you, have a simple gathering instead? Better yet, let another relative take a turn at hosting this year’s celebration.

3. Don’t do it all yourself: Involve every member of the family right down to the toddlers. If you can’t do it together, then maybe it’s not something you need to do at all. Turn decorating, shopping, gift-wrapping, baking, and even house cleaning into family-time activities.

4. Plan ahead: Work smarter, not harder. Do as much as you can in the months before Christmas to leave December open for spontaneous joy. Get the car serviced early  so it will be ready for holiday travel, bake and freeze cookies throughout November, start addressing Christmas card envelopes during the summer while you’re sitting in the sun sipping lemonade.

5. Spend less money: Nothing adds stress to the season like worrying about how you’ll pay the credit card bill come January. Remember that it’s the thought that counts. Think of creative gifts you can give that cost less but express your love. Keep a journal of all your expenditures. Know each day how much you’ve spent so far. Shop fast.  The more time you spend in the store, the more money it will cost you.

6. Simplify gift shopping: Plan ahead, make a list, and stick to it. Shop throughout the year rather than doing it all at the last minute. Instead of individual gifts, buy one item for an entire family such as a board game.

7. Celebrate family and community: Schedule time for fun and relaxing together. Put it on your calendar and make it top priority. Don’t let anything get in your way. If you’re too busy to drive through the neighborhood with the kids looking at the lights and listening to Christmas music, re-arrange your schedule. Whatever you’re planning to do, share it with someone and make it quality time.

8.  Create lasting, loving memories: Be selective. Don’t fill every moment of the season with frantic activity. Think quality, not quantity. Reading stories together, a relaxed tree-trimming, singing carols, making snow angels, or just enjoying the evening stars and sharing a cup of hot cocoa can be more enjoyable than attending every play, concert, and party of the season. Volunteer as a family to sort food at a food bank, organize a toy or coat drive, deliver meals on wheels, or serve Christmas dinner at a shelter. These are memories you’ll cherish forever.

9. Tame the greediest: Steer  the family’s focus toward the needs of others and how your family can render service. Help everyone to develop an attitude of gratitude instead of always wanting something more. Talk about ways to share the season’s joy with others. Instead of wish lists, make a list of ways to practice generosity. These might include helping someone with shoveling, shopping, decorating, or baking. Or choose a volunteer project you can work on together as a family. Keep the TV turned off as much as possible to avoid commercials.

10. Create fun new traditions: Buy a new cookie cutter each year to add to a collection, or shop as a family to buy an early Christmas present for yourselves like a board game you can play throughout  December.

For now though, I am inspired by this awsome outfit from Gizza called the Cardigan with T Shirt and the gorgeous new hair from Elikatira called Libby, about to sip my warm hot chocolate from What Next. So what are you waiting for, come take a walk to our destination for today: -

#466 Adopt the pace of Nature with Zerkalo

Maybe I am on a nature rant at the moment, but I so miss camping. Having not done it since Christmas, I am starting to feel the urge once again. Feels like a travel bug when you get it, but instead it is exciting exploring a new place, pitching a tent, starting a fire, and then chatting with friends and love ones and being away from everything except for yourselves.

Here are five reasons why camping is so much fun: -

Camping makes me realise the things I need to exist and be happy are actually very simple. All you need are these five things to make camping so much fun.

1) Shelter: - In my case I have ‘Aggie’ the tent. I bought her last year for a camping holiday in France. She was given this name as no matter what how I put her up she is always a bit saggy. She provides us with adequate space for sleeping and storage and is even big enough for me to stand up in (sometimes being small has it’s advantages).

2) Food: - I have a brilliant 2 ring camping stove with a grill, so we can pretty much cook anything we’d normally cook at home. A billy available, firewood a plenty and matches to light the way. No mods and cons, just a simple get away with what the earth supplies. (Maybe the occasion firelighter just in case the earth gives too much rain ;).

3) Bed: - To be honest this is far from simple and usually consists of an air bed, double sleeping bag, duvet and pillows, but everyone is allowed a bit of comfort aren’t they? I really enjoy just having the things I need around me. In some ways it’s similar to travelling, with all my belongings packed into one backpack. It feels so liberating!

4) Peace: - Camping is just so quiet and peaceful. As I sit here on my verandah typing this, I can hear the birds tweeting, but this is overpowed by the noise of cars driving along the road further down adjacent to my house. When you are camping, its the sounds of nature that become the soundtrack to your day. There is nothing better than being treated to a rather chatty owl at night to send me off to my sleep to be woken up by a beautiful dawn chorus of cockatoos. Bliss!

5) Disconnected: - I quite like being disconnected from the outside world, no television, no phone, no Wi-Fi. Although on my last trip I somehow managed to find Wi-Fi in the middle of a field. There is something quite nice about being in the moment with your fellow camper and not being distracted by the outside world. Forced disconnection from the distractions of everyday life means we get time to reconnect. Just talking, listening, laughing and planning for future adventures together if you are with a loved one is just pure enjoyment. Nothing but the stars overhead and the sounds of the nightlife around you. Did i mention the possums?? OMG. I guess that is better than lions.

These are the reasons why I love camping, and of course finding the new Bedouin Tent created by an awesome designer  - Zerkalo, this reminded me of 'Aggie'. The Bedouin tent is available now at the Fantasy Collective.

Don't you agree, sometimes we all need to get back to nature to appreciate the simple things in life. <3

#420 The Art of writing a letter with Eyelure and What Next

I had to write a letter the other day for an article that was going into a magazine. I was pretty excited. I was asked that it had to be completed the old way, "How to write a letter". I said to the publisher, What I can't email the article? I was told that this piece had to be about how to write a letter the old fashioned way, and they expected to receive it the old fashioned way. I thought to myself the days of the letter seems to be dying. I had to think, when was the last time that I had picked up a pen and had to write a letter. I honestly couldn't tell you. It would be years. My handwriting is atrocious, computer typing is so much better, easier and quicker. Xmas cards would be online and animated, and i never give out Xmas cards anymore.

I do remember a long time back that my mother without fail would have an up to date listing of all her friends and relatives that she would write too for Easter, and Christmas. The listing was so old, that the paper had so many lines through it from when people moved and changed addresses.

I went to see her at Easter, and apart from walking around the premises with her, doing laps,  as she has what is called 'Sunset Dementia' and wanders around at Sunset. I wondered to myself if she misses writing like she used to. When I arrived she was sitting in a lounge, surprise, surprise.
I approached her and she didn't know me, I couldn't kiss her to wish her a Happy Easter as then I would be given a healthy slap on the face. I have to wait till she gets a glimmer of remembrance before I can give her a kiss on the cheek.  I approached her, bent down and passed her the Easter Card from all the family with a small gift, wishing her a Happy Easter, and she picked up the card, looked at the envelope, smiled and then put it back down only to stand and walk away.  I wondered where she thought she was going, but the Easter Card was left on the chair in the envelope and forgotten.  I opened the card, put it on her dresser, and then found her and continued to do the copious laps of the premises, until it was time to say goodbye. Maybe 15 laps achieved. Only so much chatter you can do, when walking and when the person doesn't answer it gets a bit hard.

It made me wonder in the future whether people will continue to write letters. The day of the postman is slowly ending and the future of the letter will be not pen to paper but the annoying emails that seem to fill your inbox. Is this what we want?
