#645 Always time for a #selfie...

How many photos of you are on your phone right now? How many of you have your phone beside you right now? These days, humans take almost 1 trillion photos a year. (To put that into context, that’s more photos every few minutes than in the entire 19th century.) Lots of these photos are selfies—self-portraits, usually taken with a smartphone.
As of this writing, nearly 300 million Instagram photos had been tagged with the selfie label. Personally I hate taking photos of myself, and avoid being in front of the camera at all. I prefer to take the pics let alone be there smiling for all to see and post on Facebook – totally avoid!! :D What does “selfie culture” say about the world we’re living in now?

I was catching the train the other day and glanced over at another train beside me.
There was not one person on that carriage that didn’t have their phone in their face. No one was reading a book, No one was chatting and it wasn’t a quiet carriage, there were literally 50-60 people with their heads down glancing at their phone. I don’t know about you but that scares me for the future? Have we forgotten all together to talk, or dream, or be creative, or even think about the future and daydream?

Although I hate selfies, but other people seem to do it well, I have found this awesome new app from RayBan that takes selfie marketing to new heights with its own iPhone app, Reflections. It might be a bit pathetic but for the people like me that hate the full photo the background might be a good idea. This app allows users to enable both their front and back iPhone cameras at the same time to create an artsy, double-exposed image. Will see if I change my mind about selfies with this app but for now will let Mischa do all the modelling for me.

For now though, before you grab your phone, head on over to our destinations for today: -

#635 Scruffy Hospitality...

A woman I admire very much said something so simple to me when I was complaining about the state of mess in my house.. She said whenever someone was coming to her home — a home with five children in it — and she started to worry about how her home looked, she would stop and think: "Are they coming to see me, or are they coming to see my home?" It occurred to her that someone who would have a problem with her home looking like a family of seven lived in it wasn't really someone's opinion she cared about.  I'd love to say I embraced that wisdom immediately, but I didn't. Slowly, though, I have let go of some of the crazy things I believed must happen before people entered my front door. The first thing I let go was the dog and cat hairs. A sweep I did do, but would fret seeing a ball of hair fly across the timber floors.  Over the years, I've became more relaxed. Next, I didn't dust. Nobody said a word, and they came back again. 0.0.. :)
I didn't plan the entire meal around foods I could prepare ahead of time so my kitchen could be spotless when my guests arrived. Friends jumped in the kitchen mainly desert time, am hopeless at deserts and they helped me finish making dinner, and we had fun.
I call this scruffy hospitality. Scruffy hospitality means you’re not waiting for everything in your house to be in order before you host and serve friends in your home. Scruffy hospitality means you hunger more for good conversation and serving a simple meal of what you have, not what you don’t have. It's hard to let go of the belief that our homes need to be picture-perfect — or maybe I should say "Pinterest-perfect" — before we can welcome guests. The idea that we must make our home look unlived in before having people over stops so many of us from sharing life together. So next time you are about to entertain, think really is it that bad?

#633 Not always a queen...I am a queen of my own destiny.

'The grass was not greener on the other side. She knew because she’d looked. Turned out happiness was a practice, not a place. So she made the choice to practice every day. – Queenisms'

It’s easy to fall into thinking that someone else has a happier life than we do. Maybe they’re thinner, richer, smarter, more creative, luckier or have a high achieving family. If happiness were something that could be guaranteed by all those things, the tabloid magazines would have to fold. We believe happiness is something that must be practiced using the tools of gratitude, positive self talk and boundary setting. Daily habits of happiness grow into a lifetime of joy. You can be a queen of your own life, but don't think because that person has more money do you wish for their life, as the grass is not always greener on the other side.

#622 It takes 26 muscles to smile and 62 muscles to frown..

Whilst there seems to be not much to smile about in the world at present with the tragedies, the ISIS attacks and so on. Experts in the medical field are now telling us that smiling is actually good for our immune system. Smiling for as little as 8 minutes a day (only 0.5% of the time!) raises the level of a number of the chemicals which protect our systems from germ attack. I’m definitely in need of this today with my sudden onset of a chest infection.
The good news is that researchers tell us that your brain can't tell the difference between a forced smile and a real one - it assumes that the muscle movement is voluntary and starts to release happy hormones anyway. They make you feel warm and tingly and happy, which makes you smile more, which triggers the release of more happiness hormones, etc, etc. This can become addictive! The good news is that you can get a fix of them anytime, and lo and behold, the happy hormones will start making you feel happier too!!
Another advantage to smiling more is the sheer efficiency of it! It uses less muscular effort than frowning - it takes 26 muscles to smile and 62 muscles to frown…..so it's a more effective use of your energy. Besides, I'd much rather develop smile lines around my eyes and mouth, than dig a deep frown crevasse in my forehead.
So, as you travel around your world, your work, your friends, even shopping, make an effort to smile. Smile at dogs and children, at the neighbours, at your family at even total strangers - you'll be surprised and delighted at some of the reactions! When they smile back, enjoy the happy feeling it gives you!!

#620 Living true to yourself is the key to a calm, balanced and happy mind....

We all overthink aspects of our lives. Whether its decisions, regrets, self-worth, or general worries about the future, we're so often stuck inside our own heads that it feels like there's no way out. Here's how to quit overthinking everything and move on. In all seriousness, though, this is one of my biggest problems. I feel like I'm always stuck in a loop that goes nowhere because I can't get out of my own head. Once in a while I break free, but most of the time my own personal anxieties keep me from getting on the right track.
When we talk about overthinking, we're talking about a couple of different things. On one hand, overthinking is when you get caught in those loops where you're just thinking about one single event over and over – ie: like a tyre going 'thump thump' and you think the worst.... We’ll that is me anyhow!! I start thinking about everything I have to do about that tyre even before I get out of the car to see what the problem is. I basically over analyze and overthink. Driving myself crazy in worry.

Either way, overthinking is basically when you can't think about anything else, and it's affecting your life in a negative way. The end goal here is the same: get out of that thinking loop and move on.

When faced with the type of difficult decision that causes most of us to overthink, it's natural to seek out advice from others. This usually means we talk through a problem with so many people that it's impossible not to overthink.

For me though I teach myself to stop worrying, fretting and to get out, get some fresh air, piece by piece the issue and think now what am I going to do. Just listening to the birds sing, and chirp calms me down and helps me to stop worrying and just have a moment of peace.
As they say, Living true to yourself is the key to a calm, balanced and happy mind.
