#645 Always time for a #selfie...

How many photos of you are on your phone right now? How many of you have your phone beside you right now? These days, humans take almost 1 trillion photos a year. (To put that into context, that’s more photos every few minutes than in the entire 19th century.) Lots of these photos are selfies—self-portraits, usually taken with a smartphone.
As of this writing, nearly 300 million Instagram photos had been tagged with the selfie label. Personally I hate taking photos of myself, and avoid being in front of the camera at all. I prefer to take the pics let alone be there smiling for all to see and post on Facebook – totally avoid!! :D What does “selfie culture” say about the world we’re living in now?

I was catching the train the other day and glanced over at another train beside me.
There was not one person on that carriage that didn’t have their phone in their face. No one was reading a book, No one was chatting and it wasn’t a quiet carriage, there were literally 50-60 people with their heads down glancing at their phone. I don’t know about you but that scares me for the future? Have we forgotten all together to talk, or dream, or be creative, or even think about the future and daydream?

Although I hate selfies, but other people seem to do it well, I have found this awesome new app from RayBan that takes selfie marketing to new heights with its own iPhone app, Reflections. It might be a bit pathetic but for the people like me that hate the full photo the background might be a good idea. This app allows users to enable both their front and back iPhone cameras at the same time to create an artsy, double-exposed image. Will see if I change my mind about selfies with this app but for now will let Mischa do all the modelling for me.

For now though, before you grab your phone, head on over to our destinations for today: -

#518 Four Star Camping in style...@ Shiny Shabby

Whether you're an avid camper or reluctantly only sleep under canvas when forced, there are certain things that only real campers will know. Unfortunately I like all my mods and cons, especially my hair straighter, so if I have to camp, only one night is allowed as I end up with curls that are ringlets which no-one ever wants to see that..especially me.

I believe that some of us don't mind the rough and tough of backyard camping or prefer like the above, to have a power point handy. Here are my six thoughts about camping.

1. Camping is very tribal. The ultra light backpackers look down on the glampers for bringing most of the house, while the glampers smirk at the backpackers trying to get changed in a space the size of a coffin. Glamper being me!!  Some campsites will capitalize on this, advertising themselves as ‘family friendly’ (screaming kids from 6am to 10pm), ‘dog friendly’ (same as kids but all night too) or ‘adults only’ (fewer kids, more alcohol).
2. No matter how carefully you plan, you will forget something vital such as tent poles, the pump for the inflatable mattress or spare underwear, or it will break on day one. Real campers will always carry a repair kit and improvise replacements utilizing twigs, string and duct tape without conceding a trip to the shops.
3. Tent sizes are a work of fiction. A two man tent will only take two small and very friendly men. A four man tent is the minimum for a couple while a six-man tent will only take two adults and a couple of kids. One-man tents are for masochists who don’t mind leaving all their gear outside and removing slugs from their boots in the morning.
4. Pop-up tents are amazing bits of kit that allow you to get a shelter up and usable in a couple of minutes. However, they will also take a combined degree in engineering and origami to get them back into the bag. All other tents will only fit back into the bag after being folded and rolled in a very specific way, which you will have forgotten since last year. The family in the next tent over will be packed and leave within 30 minutes.
5. Whatever the weather forecast, it will rain just as you are packing up, forcing you to put the tent back up in the house to dry it properly. Your house will smell of damp field for days and lastly,
6. Lastly, experienced campers will know that one of the joys of camping is getting back home. The hot showers! Running water inside! Bone-dry duvets! En-suite toilets! Isn't there any wonder why I prefer four star camping!! <3
