#579 Time to head home...




In Elizabeth Gilbert’s ‘Eat Pray Love’, it speaks about going on a spiritual journey to exotic destinations such as Italy, India and Indonesia after enduring a challenging phase in her life. At the end of the journey, inner peace was found and all the displaced parts of herself were placed into one beautiful whole.  In saying the above, did you know our spiritual journey can also be found within Secondlife?


The human character is complex and cannot be fully understood from one point of reference that is offered by one cultural viewpoint. We have to go beyond what we’re familiar with and expose ourselves to new perspectives, embrace different opinions and unearth the subtle and concealed aspects of people’s personalities. Unfortunately though, within Second life, some people forget there are people behind the screen and can border on harassment of others, stalking, ridiculing, criticising and having expectations of others that is rude and belligerent. It is remembering that people within Second life come from different backgrounds, have different morals, beliefs, behaviors, different lives and different homes. We are not all the same. Each person is unique in their careers, abilities and phases in their lives. Never one of us is the same.


Within Second life, ’some’ unfortunately have a very narrow perspective of others which is a loose term called ethnocentrism, which is defined as “the tendency of other people to judge other cultures by the values and assumptions of their own culture”. Ethnocentrism is a deadly psychic disease, which can infiltrate the minds and hearts of individuals and cause them to behave in cruel and demeaning ways towards their fellow human beings.


Racial bias, discrimination, ethnic cleansing and cultural superiority are all by-products of this harsh philosophy. We see these behaviours in our media often. All of these behaviours can lead to serious world problems, such as corruption, crime and even war. There are countless times in history when we have seen this play out, like the reign of Hitler in Germany, the Apartheid era in South Africa, and the American Civil Rights Movement in the USA.


Second life gives us options to be who we want to be, and some of us are the same in world as we are outside of Second life. There are others that unfortunately show a different side. We need to remember to open ourselves up to other cultures, be not biased, ignorant or prejudiced. These internal blocks should be removed if we would like to be part of the solution for breeding cultural understanding. As Gandhi famously said, “We must be the change we wish to see in the world.”

Apple Fall delights us once again with one of their latest creations and that being the
Old Manufactory for THE LIAISON COLLABORATIVE EVENT.

The Old Manufactory started out life as a small, quaint hall; used for special gatherings and was seen as a small monument in its’ landscape. The original part of the hall consisted of the one large room, the original stone building. It had heavy terracotta tiled roofing and some ornate molding details, some of which are still present and so the story goes from Love to Decorate blog.

I am constantly amazed at the outstanding work of our designers in SL and how they can create an item that is part of our real life. In reading the blog from Love to Decorate it states that 'The factory' was in use from 1923; the company’s’ founding year, all the way up to the mid 1990’s, when the company decided to vacate the property to move to a larger premises. The building has laid bare since, and is waiting for a new owner to create the next stage in its’ history in which I have made this my home in Secondlife.

Apart from the awesome design, Apple Fall have also created some beautiful décor which I showcase for you today, so what are you waiting for, come take a walk to our destination for today: -

#527 Text: - They have them in stock



Ugh, there are very few times when I let myself get frustrated by large corporations (I’ve resigned to the fact that they may just not put as much emphasis on certain things as smaller companies do -ie Customer Service) but stores frustrate me. To explain, I like to brouse around shops and to put it plainly if I see something that I like I take a pic of it with my phone which includes price as well.
I may take a few weeks to go get it but this is my frustration.

So, here’s the story.  I wanted to buy a blanket from this store.  Not just any blanket… a blanket that has a beautiful weave and seems to be one of a kind. So I took the photo and price and came back in a fortnight and they said they didn't have any left, ok that was my fault, however was told it was available online.  So, I log on to the website to check stock and hopefully, order online to have it shipped to my house.  Easy enough right?  Yay!  Found the blanket and now, I’ve added it to my cart.
Woot… Now, to check out and get my blanket shipped to me. But wait.  What’s that little icon with the cross through it. Ohhh, I can’t actually buy it online.  Darn. Stupid, why would the advice be correct...

So, I pick up the phone and call the store and get an operator.

Me:  “Hi, I’m sitting and looking at a product that I want but it’s at a location, in stock, and I live in (blank)  How can I get that product?”
Operator:  “You can’t”
Huh.  I can’t get a product that I clearly see on the website.  Even though that took me back a bit, I press on.
Me: “Oh.  Well, can I get it transferred between stores?”
Operator:  “No.”
Me:  “Umm… Okay, why does it allow you to add it to a shopping cart for online shopping?”
Operator:  “Well, some people make a list, print it out and bring it into the store.”
Me:  “No, they don’t really… Do they?”
Operator:  “I don’t know.  You can buy some products online but not all of them.”
Me:  “Where do the products come from?”
Operator:  “A central warehouse.”
Me:  “Okay, how can I get that central warehouse to send a blanket to me?”
Operator:  “They can’t.”
Me:  “Why?”
Operator:  “Because they don’t carry that item.”
Me:  “Okay, so why can’t I buy it online again?”
Operator:  “Because we don’t take credit cards over the phone or Internet.”
Me:  “But you just said some items can be purchased online and hence the reason the website says Buy Online, and it allows me to add to my cart.”
Operator:  “Only some items can be bought online.”

At this point, I’m confused.  Like… really, really confused.

Me to Operator: So to recap, even though the product says it is available, you won't transfer it from one store to another store, I can't purchase via credit card? I need to travel the distance to go get the blanket otherwise I miss out... Can you confirm that the blanket is available at this store.
Operator:  “No you will need to call the store direct.”

Thinks to myself it is my fault for not purchasing it earlier, but customer service is not as good as it used to be..do you think?

#525 The person that has no imagination has no wings




Muhammad Ali  once said, “The man who has no imagination, has no wings.”


Imagination is the building block to help you visualize your dreams in life. If you have no imagination you probably don't know which direction to go in life. We are all just birds ready to fly in our own directions. If we have no imagination then our wings will always be clipped.
Imagine a world where we were suddenly stripped of imagination. Imagine what the future in such a world would be like. It would become stagnate; void of original thought from human beings. It doesn’t matter how such a tragedy would occur, that’s not the point. But that it occurred.


Of course, if humanity had never had imagination from the beginning, most likely, we would never develop, grow, or evolve, nor be able to think things through or solve problems. Nobody would have an original thought. Our minds would be totally handicapped. There would have been no art, no music, no literature, no sports, no talent, no creativity whatsoever, not much of anything. There would never have been any inventions, innovations, improvements, nor any changes whatsoever. But in this modern technological age, if our ability to imagine things and to be creative simply voided out in our minds, what would happen? For starters, there would be total stagnation. There would be no new thought processes, no new ideas, no further inventions or innovations or improvements, and there’d be no changes whatsoever. Perhaps we would lose interest in all our clever technologies and inventions of the modern age. Perhaps we would slip back into total barbarism and savagery once again.
We would forget how far we have come technology, and most likely everything technological would collapse, and so society would collapse. We would become a lethargic, careless, thoughtless people, barely surviving in a world where our minds have become stifled and limited. We wouldn’t be able to dwell on the past, to reminisce; nor would we be able to imagine the future, to dream for greater things to come. So if you can even imagine what life would be like without your imagination, that would be a very sad state and life would be terrible and bleak if it were true.


Thank God such a disaster has never occurred, and most likely never will. We should be thankful that we do have the ability to imagine, to be creative, to conjure up great ideas, and to invent and improve things, to think things through and solve problems.
We should never take that wonderful ability for granted.
