#763 Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes.. Including you.

Saying goodbye to the sun, sea and freedom, and enjoying time with your loved ones can often feel like the end of the world especially when that Monday rolls around, or when the holidays are over

There's nothing like a dose of the post-holiday blues especially after Easter to make you wish you'd chucked it all in and became a traveler just living out of your pockets only.

The secret to getting back to work, is to have a purpose and to forget about time. Whether you mentor a new person, declutter the office, or consider the things you love about your job, then ask your boss if you can do more of them. Try not to be nervous about asking; your boss usually wants you to succeed, especially if it will make him or her look good, too.

I know we all wish we can have longer lay ins and forget about everything else for a moment, but we all have to pay those dreaded bills that arrive throughout the week.  Set that alarm, try and get up on the first ding, and remember, the weekend is not far away. Hope you all had an amazing Easter xx

#665 Today I don't feel like doing anything...

As the song goes, "Today I don't feel like doing anything"... Nothing at all..

So when did I start to take life so seriously?
Sometimes, I just want to scream when I realize how wrapped up I can get in the “importance” of my day-to-day. This is an urgent reminder that I am in “serious” need of some laughter and good old fashioned play time. In these times, I turn to my inner child for help. We’ve all got one. They remind us how to be free, spontaneous, imaginative and most importantly, they help us to reconnect with our personal truths.
Here are 5 fun ways to get in touch with your inner child and help make them a part of your life:

1. Express yourself. Take out a piece of blank paper and draw. Draw whatever comes to mind. Even better Get your hands on a colouring book, stat! (Bonus points for using crayons.)

2. Play! Play! Play!  If you are lucky enough to have sentimental parents, you may have an attic or basement filled with your old toys. Not a chance? No problem. Hit a local second hand store in your area and look for old toys you used to play with. Bring them home and play! Have a drunken friend’s night and bring out Monopoly for some laughter.

3. Kick back and enjoy some me time: - Watch old children's shows that you used to watch as a kid. Those memories will come flooding back and you'll be feeling light hearted in no time. Some classic shows are now available on Netflix.

4. Sing - As a kid, I can remember belting out songs at the top of my lungs. I didn't care who heard me and I didn't care if I was any good. One of my favourite activities to do when i find myself too serious is to sing as badly as a I can. Turn up the volume of something that makes you smile and sing.. :).

5. Laugh - Find something that makes you laugh and do it! it's impossible to think about anything serious or stressful when you are crying and gagging with laughter. Invite some friends over, who cares if the house is messy. They are coming to see you and have some laughs not to admire the mess.

#580 It's ok to say No...

“All of our unhappiness comes from our inability to be alone.” – Jean de la Bruyere

Being alone and being lonely are not the same thing. I am used to spending time alone. I’m not single, but being alone (as in no one around for ½ day etc etc) is a new concept for me. I have brothers and sisters, I have nephews and nieces, (lots). I loved being around people, and absolutely hated my own time. It is along the way that I learnt to appreciate my alone time. This has caused many people in my life to worry about me. They think something is wrong. They think I am depressed and unhappy. Whilst others think I have become unsociable and some have taken it personally. I have lost some friends along the way because they were so used to just dropping over every day, if not twice a day and I ended up saying, “I love you, but can you come another day”?

What may seem rude to them is that I don’t need their undivided attention anymore, I have learnt as well to say NO. I was known as the person who was always busy and never home, always available anytime. The truth is that I found it exhausting but I didn’t know any other way to be. It was the only way I knew how to be part of a social circle that I could relate to in any way.

I am a very private person and although I connect with people easily, I am selective about making friends and letting people into my life. So, rather than be alone, I did what I needed to in order to stay part of my social circle.  I always felt like I didn’t quite relate or fit in, but at the same time I didn’t want to stand out or be different — I wanted to feel part of the group. We had similar backgrounds and shared an interest in music, attending concerts, eating out and travelling. I had many fun and enjoyable times, but I couldn’t help but feel as though something was missing. It was depth and substance that was missing.

So peace and alone time is something I had never experienced. In fact, it wasn’t even something I knew I wanted until two-three years ago when I was at an emotional breaking point and peace and alone time was the only two things that kept me sane. I had to take a step back from life. The truth is spending time alone is how I rediscovered my happiness. I had time to reflect on what made me happy and what had been causing me pain. I became aware of the people in my life who contributed positive energy and intentions and those who did not. Most importantly, for the first time in my life, I felt at peace.

I’d love you to share your experience. How do you feel about spending time alone?

#545 Lost in Rosie

We are naturally aspirational creatures, and can’t help chasing after perfection. Nearly every person on the planet wishes they had perfect skin or the perfect body. The funny thing about perfection is that it’s a slippery concept. 300 years ago the ideal woman had small breasts, round hips and thunder thighs. In 1920s America a flat chested boyish figure with a round face and teeny tiny lips was the beauty ideal. Women would actually bind their breasts in order to achieve a flatter look. I most definitely am glad I was not born in the 1920’s.

Effectively, you are not the one who decides how to be beautiful, the culture around you does, through the movies, fashion advertisements and editorials it produces. Ideals change with the trends. One small spark can set off a forest fire, and all it takes is one small seed of an idea to be planted to change how everyone sees the world. Before the young and very girlish Kate Moss came along models were women. Supermodels like Cindy Crawford had curves, muscles and broadness. Their whole presence was about feminine strength. But Kate Moss transfixed everyone with what was considered a strange kind of beauty at the time. Kate was small, short, extremely thin and charmingly imperfect. Editors pointed out how she had the look of a heroin addict, and then called her a “heroin chic” – in which a radically new form of beauty was born. It was the spark that set the whole industry on fire.

Photoshop the programme was launched on February 19, 1990, just four months before Kate Moss’ big modeling debut on the cover of The Face magazine. It was a remarkable coincidence. Photoshop would go on to have as profound an effect on the fashion industry as Kate would have on the appearance of models. It was a decided turning point in our cultural perception of beauty – a point at which our standards and expectations would begin to grow unreasonably high. Skin would become waxy smooth, teeth flawlessly white, the body without a single fold, wrinkle, vein or bulge. Suddenly smiling faces had no natural laugh lines and slouching bodies no sign of skin folds. These are simply things that all bodies do, but thanks to the extensive use of Photoshop in the media, the natural began to be not quite what our real bodies and faces are supposed to look like.

In Secondlife the flawless beauty still remains, the slight curve of the waist but the long elongated legs is still around. Such beauty is what our designer for the day has created for us and that being Elysium, and the beauty that awaits you of ‘Rosie’.

In Secondlife there is no harm to use Photoshop, but do you think we should be photoshopping real beauty? Isn’t the flaws all a matter of who we all are?

#530 Forlorn

My original article to go with this picture has now changed, my intention was to write about why we feel so forlorn sometimes. However, due to what has occurred in France the past few days, I wanted to share with you my thoughts.

Most people in the world have freedom of speech that is the right to express opinions and ideas freely.  People often use that freedom by writing newspapers, magazines, or blogs. However words and images may sometimes upset others.

Whilst we were still recovering from the gunmen that attacked people who worked for a French magazine called Charlie Hebdo, killing at least 10 workers at the office in Paris, France. They also killed two police officers. The attackers were angry that the magazine had printed cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed. It is against the rule of the Islam religion to show his image. Across the planet, millions of people showed their support for the magazine. Many held pens and pencils in the air to represent that a free press is essential. Others carried signs that said “Je suis Charlie.”

Did you know that recently the French ban on face covering (French: Loi interdisant la dissimulation du visage dans l'espace public, "Act prohibiting concealment of the face in public space") is an act of parliament passed by the Senate of France on 14 September 2010 and was confirmed in late 2014, resulting in the ban on the wearing of face-covering headgear, including masks, helmets, balaclava, niqābs and other veils covering the face in public places, except under specified circumstances. The ban also applied to the burqa, a full-body covering, if it covers the face.

On a night when thousands of Paris residents and tourists were reveling and fans were enjoying a soccer match between France and world champion Germany, horror struck in an unprecedented manner. Terrorists -- some with AK-47s, some reportedly with bombs strapped to them – attacked a rock concert where over hundreds of people were killed by at least 3-4 gunman.

Countries around the world were shocked at what had happened. In solidarity we shared the horror together, mourning the hundreds that were killed. We updated our Facebook pages to be red, white and blue, The Eiffel Tower was clocked in red white and blue, even so much as the Opera House in Australia.
Over the weekend French warplanes pounded the Islamic State (IS) group’s stronghold in Syria’s Raqa destroying a command post and a training camp. I have to ask, whilst I feeling so forlorn at the tragedy that occurred, was the airstrikes necessary? I understand an eye for an eye, but isn’t there another way to weed out the terrorists..  ??? (Food for thought).

#417 Easter Hijack with Sari Sari, Trompe Loeil and Emery

In Australia, Easter is celebrated over a long weekend. Which is just bloody awesome, only because it is a time for many to kick back and relax. My creative juices seem to flow when I relax and spend some much needed 'me' time away from the hustle and bustle of work. Or so I thought, until I stupidly posted on a social media site that I had the house to myself and wouldn't it be lovely later on to have a girls night in. Then the phone calls started, "I am coming over with the wine", "I am bringing food", "I'm bringing a movie" "I'm bringing copious wine" and my house became a hoard of laughing, giggling, drunk women in no time. :)

Reminder to myself don't go and post on a social media site that you have the house to yourself.
So that was last night, and I love them all dearly. My head is slightly hurting still from too much wine and stomach can't believe the workout it got from so much laughing. But now is the time to relax with my Easter Egg, devouring that chocolate egg and giving time to revitalizing my body, mind and spirit.

What I will be doing in only a few hours is heading to the Xiasumi School Festival to visit some spectacular designers. One in particular that I adore is that of Sari Sari. Sari Sari can be located at Xiasumi, at the Art Club (1st floor of the building on the right side facing the auditorium).  Xiasumi School Festival is open from  3 April - 21 April.
