#660 Roots run deep..

Having a family member who was adopted, I personally believe that adoptees have a right to know who are their biological parents and do think it’s absurd that it’s even a question as to whether adoptees should be afforded the opportunity to obtain original birth certificates and know their true identities.

Birth parents I also believe have a right to privacy, but by no means do I think that they should be able to have their identities hidden from their biological children. As individuals, a birth parent has a right to refuse a phone call and ignore an email or a letter, just like anyone else who does not want to correspond with someone. But hiding the truth is not the way to protect a birth parent’s right to privacy. Most adoptees I know and one being my brother, has searched for his biological parents to no avail. With ageing parents, the time is getting closer to never knowing. Adopted children yearn for their roots. They run into obstacles, but they keep going. They want to know. They need to know. In most cases, when they find their biological mother or father, they reach out just to understand and to see what other family they may have. They want to establish a connection, but they are also respectful of the responses they get in return.

Hiding the truth is not the way to protect a birth parent’s right to privacy. When I think of people who are adopted, I compare it to a massive tree. It's strong and unmoving because its roots run deep, however the emotions are like the deep roots of the tree. They pervade the land and are, in a way, one with it. Deep running emotions define a person and affect the ways they act. A person without the knowledge of their past history, origin, culture is like a tree without roots and will act out.

How can they grow and develop if they have no knowledge of where they have come from, otherwise they will decay inside and become part of the land…

#571 The slow suicide of the soul...

If we imagine that our body is a violin whose strings are the talents and capacities granted by our Source and Creator, the role of musician is played by our soul whose intent and purpose is to play that piece of music unique and special to us over the course of a lifetime.

Depression starts when we find ourselves playing someone else’s music, singing someone else’s song. Depression is the slow suicide of the soul. Self-expression is the way out. Depression is one of the taboo topics, but more of late you hear people are discussing it openly.
So what is depression? Depression is when we can feel sad, moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time (weeks, months or even years) and sometimes without any apparent reason. Depression is more than just a low mood – it's a serious condition that affects your physical and mental health.

What causes Depression? - While we don’t know exactly what causes depression, a number of things are often linked to its development. Depression usually results from a combination of recent events and other longer-term or personal factors, rather than one immediate issue or event.
Some personal factors that cause depression are:

Family history – Depression can run in families and some people will be at an increased genetic risk. However, having a parent or close relative with depression doesn’t mean you’ll automatically have the same experience. Life circumstances and other personal factors are still likely to have an important influence.
Personality – Some people may be more at risk of depression because of their personality, particularly if they have a tendency to worry a lot, have low self-esteem, are perfectionists, are sensitive to personal criticism, or are self-critical and negative.

Serious medical illness –The stress and worry of coping with a serious illness can lead to depression, especially if you’re dealing with long-term management and/or chronic pain.
Drug and alcohol use – Drug and alcohol use can both lead to and result from depression. Many people with depression also have drug and alcohol problems.

So is there any help? and what works?- Everyone's different. Treatment needs to be tailored to your condition, circumstances, needs and preferences. Most people with anxiety or depression benefit from one or a combination of the following: lifestyle changes and social support, psychological therapies, medical therapies. The most important thing to do is to talk to someone, go visit your doctor and ask for help!!

#566 A place to breathe...

A huge pain point in your working environment, whether that is blogging, designing, or both, or juggling family, life and other jobs outside of Second life is that we all have too much to do in too little time.

To make matters worse, the technology of our business tools, computer getting outdated, programs being enhanced, software not compatible with your computer, business tools such as email, MS Office, smartphones, the internet) is constantly changing. Evolving, and very quickly becoming hard to keep up.

In saying this, it is the reason why my blog has been a little behind of late. With a black screen flickering when trying to move in Secondlife, graphic card most certainly dying, Second life impossible to get on due to the above. Now with a lesser graphic card in use to get me by and still crashing, it is time to save up for another computer urgently.

Our pressure’s aren’t always technology related either. We have pressures in one’s life to manage bills, manage a household, manage deadlines, and manage people even. Given all our ‘stressors’ in life, we often forget to breathe. Not to mention, did I tell you I'm painting my house..Help me now!!

By what I mean by breathe is to have quality time to sleep, have a decent sleep, and a place to rest the head free from the above. Somewhere that is not going to cause more stress, by way of example a phone going ‘beep’ when a text or snap chat arrives.

I have to ask, and yes am guilty of it, who has technology by their bedside, who keeps their smart phone as easy reach, who has their I pad on their bedside table?

Imagine a night where you can keep the above technology down in the kitchen, down in the lounge room and a place to rest your head where there are no stressors, A place to breathe.
