#670 It's a Cruel Summer...


Whether it’s long sunny days or sharp showers and thunderstorms that you prefer, summer can be a range of different things for different people. For most of us there’s always the expectation that summer will be filled with long, hot, lazy days and sunshine from dawn to dusk. The anticipation of trips to the beach and getting the barbeque out can almost be too much to bear. Alas for us Aussies it’s usually more often showers than sunshine and when the sun does come out it is stinking hot and over 42'c.

Summer is the time to relax and play outside, but sun and fun does not come worry-free. Skin damage and dehydration are serious concerns in the summer sun and heat. Whether you’re relaxing by the pool, heading to the beach, packing for a road trip, or gearing up for a run, follow our tips to beat the heat and stay safe.

1. Skin Safety - Never forget the sunscreen! and I don't mean last years.
Sunscreens labeled broad spectrum are best, because these types optimally block UVA and UVB sunlight. Sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide only do not optimally block all the wavelengths of sunlight. There are a lot more skin cancers popping up of late amongst our friends and family, you need to note the importance of applying daily, not just on days spent at the beach.

2. Hydration - When you’re out for a run, working in the yard, playing Frisbee on the beach, or simply lounging by the pool, don’t forget to bring your water bottle. Dehydration is a serious issue that could be life-threatening when not treated properly. Thirst, dry mouth, headache and dizziness could be signs of mild to moderate dehydration. You can prevent dehydration before it starts by filling up on fluids, and I don’t mean by the amber kind ;) While there is no science to prove you need exactly eight glasses of water a day, it is a good estimate and an easy goal to remember. Coffee, tea, almond milk, juice and foods that have a high percentage of water—especially fruits and vegetables—all count towards your daily water intake.

3. Blue Skies - Summer is the time for blue skies and rising temperatures that you can take all the colourful sundresses out, reach at the back of the cupboard for those flip-flops and sandals, put on your new sunglasses and your trusty ancient straw hat. And if the boyfriend (husband, dad, granddad, uncle, brother) still keeps that Hawaiian shirt at the back of the wardrobe (you know the one I mean, right) now it's the time to dig it up and encourage him to wear it. #519 Let's go for a walk in the country




I love you isn’t always expressed in those exact words, but the message is just as sweet to my ears. When my 11-year-old niece says “Can we go for a walk” I pause, smile and promptly put on my sneakers. I savour several things about that phrase: the signal to slow down, the invitation to spend quality time with my niece and her voiced desire to be outdoors.

I actively encourage outdoor play, and whilst she is running around and I am struggling to keep up, it keeps me fitter, and spending regular time exploring nearby green spaces (including the backyard!).  While the benefits for my niece and myself are well documented, I’ve become increasingly aware of the benefits outdoor time brings to me as well.

I savour the fact that she is not tethered to electronic devices as yet. Am sure it will come.  It’s how much of business—and even schoolwork—gets done these days by being indoors and not outdoors. By being focused on computers, smartphones and the like can steal opportunities to bond with friends and family—to make lasting memories—when we fail to tune out email streams when the workday is done and to afford ourselves the gift of disconnecting.

That’s why I consider walk invitations and enthusiastic wildlife observations (“I see a butterfly!”) such loving expressions from my niece that brings such a wonder back to me and to feel like a child again sharing the outside world to her.

Just the sheer joy on her face as we lift up a rock together by the water and she screams with delight at seeing a crab run away and scurry under another rock as she grabs that rock and try's to find her 'Mr Crab' and non stop talks about it all the way home as she puts up a shell to her ear hearing the wind in the shell <3

#478 The Far North Coast a place called home at Nimbin


The Shiny Shabby Event opened it's doors to you the other day and one artist that I truly adore is that of Reverie. The delicate Nimbin Anklets, Bracelets and Earings are just simply gorgeous.

 The name Nimbin inspired me for this photo. Nimbin in Australia is a town that you must visit as it is like walking back into the past. Nimbin in Australia is a small town that is based in the Far North Coast of NSW. Nimbin and surrounding areas are part of what is known as the "Rainbow Region", which is of cultural importance to the Indigenous Bundjalung people. The name Nimbin comes from the local Whiyabul (Widgibal) clan whose Dreamtime speaks of the Nimbinjee spirit people protecting the area. In recent decades, since 1973, the area has become a haven for Australia's counterculture. 

 In New South Wales the cultivation, possession or sale of cannabis is punishable by law. In Nimbin, cannabis is openly bought, sold and consumed. The prevalence of a drug culture in Nimbin has been around since 1973 has been accompanied by a prevalence of collective and public creativity: colourful and spiritually-motivated art (including large paintings above the shop awnings), music, poetry, craft and fashion can all be seen on the main street. The town is known as a hotspot for alternative social activities, grassroots political discourse, and the espousal of naturalist, humanist, anarchist, feminist, libertarian, permissive, new-age, mystical and radical social philosophies (which can all be seen as collective creative endeavours).

 Whether Reverie is familiar with the town, it is surely a place that you must see. It is like walking back into the past, but the colours and the old settings of the town is what grabs you when you visit.
