For some, the cold winter weather is the time when the dreaded flu season strikes.
It may have started with a cough or a sneeze, or you may feel like someone beat you with a stick and you are now down for the count. So for those that I know that are suffering from the dreaded lurgy.
Here are five things you should do, although at all times, seek medical advice if situations get worse.
Antivirals : There are two prescription drugs on the market that work against influenza. Tamiflu is a pill, and Relenza is an inhaled powder, and both can cut about a day or two off the time spent in bed with flu.
Analgesics: Pain and fever relieving medications such as ibuprofen can reduce fever and help with achy muscle aches.
Fluids are a must, as dehydration is a special risk when people are ill and feverish. Even if you don't feel like drinking, suck on small ice cubes or ice pops, drinking can soothe a sore throat as well.
Over the Counter Remedies: Decongestants and antihistamines can help the most annoying symptoms of a cold or the flu – the runny or congested nose and some coughs caused by post-nasal drip.
Most of course is stay home and rest: If you have symptoms of flu or a bad cold, or any other virus, the best thing you can do for yourself and others is stay home and rest.
For those that are suffering from the lurgy, I feel so close to you right now and hugs you from afar.
