This quote I thought was interesting. It means generally that we look to escape from the concrete reality before us and obsessively seek to find the unreal, the unknowable and the inaccessible.
Imagine you are at a seaside, out for a day’s recreation on the beach, and you are looking out towards the water, you ignore the land and look at the ocean out of the sense of wonder that some call the source of truth. But the fact is that the real source of truth is the land behind you. “You turn your back on the land.” What you can see are ships out on the ocean, passing to an unknown destination...
The line” Wherever the truth may be” suggests that the people are searching for the truth and how to find it by watching the unchanging ocean, with its endless repetition of the same movements, rather than on the land, which presumably is more subject to change. That like everyone else we have limited vision: “We cannot look out far, We cannot look in deep...Yet we keep on looking, probably because there is nothing else for them to do. We cannot help searching for answers even from such an unlikely source as the inscrutable ocean...
