#456 Lifesaver on duty with Zerkalo and Eyelure

Some of you may not be aware but in fact I am actually in real life a lifesaver - during the summer months on weekends. Not bragging by telling you this I thought it was a fitting subject for the picture I have taken today.

Come the start of October, I take up my position on my local beach and organize my team that I have been provided for the season. I have been actively involved in the Surf Club environment for the past 12 years. Starting as what they call a Nipper - junior and then moving into the senior ranks in the surf club. Surf is my life. I have seen many and vast incidents most especially people who have no knowledge of water safety go into our beaches and forget the major rules of remaining within the flags.

What concerns me I guess is that there are some tourists that are attracted to the Australian beaches. Yes the water does look sparkly and inviting, and perhaps it is that you fancy some quality alone time with mother nature. Mother nature unfortunately has a way of dragging you under if you go out of your depth.

If there is one thing I wish to achieve with my viewers who have little swimming experience in an ocean or a lake is to not go out of your depth, no matter how much you say to yourself, just a little bit further is ok. Stay near the waters edge if you can't swim or haven't swum in a while. Always swim between the flags. There is a reason why that picture card postcard stretch of water is free of the usual beach hordes. Lifesavers put the flags in different places every day to ensure they're in the safest place for swimming depending on the conditions for that day. Yes there might be seaweed floating in that spot where the flags are raised, but unfortunately where the flags are not is not safe for you. Where the surface of the sea looks calm can actually be where the deep channels or rip currents are nearby. In fact swimming out of the flags is the most dangerous place to be unless you are a competent and strong swimmer in the ocean and even at times I struggle when there are strong currents.

My further advice to you if you swim in the ocean, don't try and save yourself. If you are in trouble ask for help early. Put your hand up!!. Don't be embarrassed that is why we are watching you, that is why we are there. The ocean can be loud or you may be a little way out, so if you are worried, in distress, there is a good chance you won't be heard so put up that hand!!. Raising your hand helps us identify you need some support. The ocean is never your friend, but it does cool you down in the summer. So make sure that you swim between the flags always.

#432 Expressing from my Heart and Soul with GizzA Creations, Olive and ieQED from Shiny Shabby

Without getting too controversial in this blog, this is a very poignant blog today and apologize if this may upset anyone. Names of people deceased have been mentioned. This is my opinion only.

I am saddened by the recent executions that occurred in Indonesia this week. Indonesian attorney-general Muhammad Prasetyo confirmed Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, along with four Africans and a Brazilian were executed simultaneously at 3.35am (AEST), each by a 13-man firing squad.  The execution was exact and no-one suffered.

I have been to Indonesia more than a handful of times and each time I arrive at the destination across the walls of the airport there are countless reminders to not carry any weapons or illegal drugs on you. The message is grounded into my soul each time I travel. I am aware of the consequences and aware of the death penalty in that country. Not that they have to worry about that problem with me.

These two adults, yes they were drug smugglers and had unfortunately been convicted of smuggling a substance that could have killed many many others. They knowingly stated this was not their first time. They were no saints. They served 10 years and a bit for their conviction. What upsets me personally is how they were paraded around, showcased, and then after such a long time were killed by execution after 10 years of reform. In Australia, we heard nothing about the other people that were also going to be executed.  I know that many travelers will now think otherwise from taking illegal drugs into Indonesia again by what has happened. It is a warning to many to not even attempt doing the same as they know what the consequences will be. There are even some that are now saying should we travel to Indonesia again. I don't believe one incident should be the reason for this boycott. I will most definitely travel to Indonesia again as it is a beautiful country and the people are lovely.

What is disheartening for me, When it is possible for people to get a second chance to reform? Is it possible, should it be possible? In this case, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran will never get that second chance ever again. RIP.
