#517 Halloween brings out all the weird and wonderful

America is a destination that I would love to visit one day, most especially New York or San Francisco. I have heard and apology if the rumors are untrue, that you get used to seeing people wearing strange outfits especially around Halloween, when it brings out something special in these cities.

There would be something really rather magical about going to work and seeing a man dressed in a wonderfully elaborate Captain Hook costume on his way to the office with a hook on one hand and a briefcase in the other. Or seeing a bus go by and inside it there’s a witch dressed in flowing black robes, a tall hat on her head, broomstick in one hand and the other hand holding a  newspaper.
I love that adults get to act like kids again, dressing up in weird and wonderful costumes and acting out their fantasies. I love that kids get to dress up to, pretending they are adults, superheros and princesses and magical creatures.

One hospital that I know in Australia has a particularly delightful tradition at Halloween. They hold  a party for all the children who started out fighting for their lives.  After weeks, or in some cases months, the kids get to go home and start the rest of their life, but every year they come back in their hundreds, dressed as lions and tigers and bears and pirates, to thank the staff who cared for them.

The staff get dressed up as well and there is something wonderful about seeing a Director  dressed as a medieval wench and her husband as a marauding viking. To see all the families, who have been through so much, having such a great time with their kids – kids who almost didn’t make it – is a true gift. It’s a reminder that what we have is so precious that we must never lose sight of how fortunate we are. So why not dress up as a pirate or a scary celebrity once a year and let our your inner demon. There’s plenty of other days for being serious.

#512 Leaving the Nest with GizzA Creations

I never understood the concept of Empty Nest syndrome, but of late have been listening to friends and family of what it means and how it affects both the family and the child.
Your first kiss. Your first love. Your first child. Your first … adult child moves out? I am sure that would be scary for both the child who is whooping for joy and ready to face life and the parent/s who think what am I going to do now.

I understand there are five family life cycles:
  1. Independence from your parents
  2. Settling down with a partner
  3. Becoming a parent to your own children
  4. Launching your adult children into their own independence stage
  5. and then your retirement years
When children-turned-young-adults begin to move out of the family home, parents may find themselves deciding not only what to do with the spare bedroom, but also what to do with themselves.

Empty nest syndrome, sometimes known as the post-parental period, isn't a medical condition. It can be a combination of separation anxiety, sadness, satisfaction and possibility -- maybe with a dash of adventure thrown into the mix. And just like the family life cycle, it too has stages, although they're less defined. Life can be full of unexpected changes, but transitioning from full house to empty nest is one that all parents know will eventually come. Learning how to embrace your newly empty nest is just one part of the journey of parenthood. Children leaving home can change you just as bringing home your first child once did.  Often, though, it's the anticipation of children leaving home that's worse than the reality of the empty nest.

It is a new life for both the child and the parent as you watch them from afar. Children leaving the nest is hardly the end -- it's not the end of being a parent or the end of your relationship with your kids. Its knowing that you have done your best as a parent and that child is on their own with your support and love.

#484 Time to cool the Mind and the Body with Ever an Angel for Sneak Peek

When things heat up outside, the key to perfect health is to find ways to cool down – mentally, emotionally and physically.
This affects everything we do including what we eat, when we exercise, and how we relax.

Here are six tips to keep you cool:

1. Avoid foods that heat you up
When the body is already hot the last thing you need is to rev it up with spicy food. Go easy on the curries, chillies, hot peppers and salsas. Sour foods like yogurt, cheese and sour cream can add too much heat. Limit excessively salty foods – they will leave you dehydrated and aggravate your skin.

2. Favour foods that cool you down
Sweet, bitter, astringent foods are the ones to go for. Good examples are sweet, ripe fruits like avocados, cherries, plums, grapes, pineapples, peaches and mangoes are perfect. Cilantro and mint are excellent and a little cinnamon is fine. Asparagus, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, zucchini and green beans are all good as well.

3. Avoid ice cold drinks
“What – no ice in my drink?? Isn't that the ultimate balance for all the heat?” Actually, no. While we need to keep cool, it is even more important to keep your digestion strong.  Your digestive system is like a fire that is responsible for converting food into energy. When the flames of your digestive fire are burning in a balanced way, you are able to assimilate all the good bits you need from your food whilst eliminating the not-so-good bits. However when you drink that iced-water with lunch, you are effectively putting out the flames of your digestive fire. So lay off the ice and go for room temperature. It will be assimilated into your body much faster and you will feel re hydrated more quickly.

4. Eat at the right time
An important part of balancing your body and keeping cool is to eat your main meal in the middle of the day when your digestive fire is strongest. However, in the summer this may not be possible at work, so therefore have a light meal at lunch -salads, protein, and fruit after.

5. Exercise with a splash
If you are working out, do it at the time of the day when nature is most cool. Early morning is best. Second best is early evening. Light exercise is recommended such as yoga, tai chi, walking and best of all, swimming especially when it is a hot night.

6. Turn down the temperature of the mind
As is the mind, so is the body. The most powerful way to settle down the mind is to build in some regular time for what I call "Me Time"  each day. Even 1/2 hr at work is enough. However there are many other ways to turn down the dial on that busy, frazzled mind. Listen to some beautiful music, take a walk in nature or practice some conscious breathing to soothe your soul.
