#890 The Smells at Christmas

Everyone remembers Christmas – the lucky ones amongst us will have fond memories of family traditions. The excitement of the bringing down of the Christmas Tree or the arrival of the real Christmas Pine tree and boxes of decorations dug out of the attic. Each year I am tempted by the fashionable decorating suggestions in the shops and magazines but my tree always ends up looking the same, with maybe one or two new additions.

Eventually the great day arrives and with it come memories of putting a tot of whisky on the hearth for Santa along with a carrot and/or biscuits for the Reindeer. Memories of not being able to sleep and then waking up to the crackling Christmas stocking lying at the end of the bed. Memories of creeping into the lounge room and finding a pile of presents beneath the twinkling tree and not waiting for the parents to say it is ok to open.

Other memories surround the smells... the smell of the hot chicken, turkey and potatoes roasting, even though it is a scorching 35ç summer in Australia. The kitchen a hive of activity and listening to the Queen’s Speech at 3pm (well not really listening), more food, Christmas Pudding and custard and then an evening of party games with friends and relatives.

Each family has its own timetable of events, and they all differ slightly, but we tend to hold onto these traditions and keep them alive over the years, passed on to our children and then our grandchildren. Of course there have been sad years, but on the whole our memories are good ones and I like to think our traditions will survive long after we have gone.

Christmas is the time of year when families and friends come together and the memories we make hold dear in our hearts not to mention the smell of our grandparent fart as he sleeps on the couch with a belly full of beer and food.
