Have you ever noticed there are certain times in your life, which brings back memories of your past, whether it be a special place, sound, or even smells. Whilst all of us have had different upbringings, there are some others that unfortunately life as a child was not easy for them nor their fault in anyway.
I think about the wars at present overseas and some of the children that have been forced out of their homes, told to walk 35km's with their parents for the sake of finding some peace in their lives.
What some people don't know apart from war, for the sake of parent's not wanting their children, more than 500,000 Australians have experienced care in an orphanage, home or other form of out of home care during the last century. As many of these people have had a family, it is highly likely that every Australia either was, is, related to, works with or knows someone who experienced childhood in an institution, or out of home care environment. We hear that there are 100,000's of displaced people walking the borders near Germany, vacating from war torn countries, when in my own country, there are children that also have never had a peaceful upbringing.
Children were placed into care for a myriad of reasons including being orphaned, being born to a single mother, family dislocation from domestic violence, divorce or separation, family poverty, and parent's inability to cope with their children.
Irrespective of how children were placed into care, it was not their fault. Nor is it the fault of the many thousands that are calling to our countries for help, and pleading for a life to bring them and their future generations happiness. We should help, and we should think what if it was me?
