For some of you, today marks a special occasion. Today is a public holiday for all of Australia and New Zealand. ANZAC Day – 25th April. This is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 13 years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. When they landed on Gallipoli they met with fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. This went on for eight months with over 60,000 Australian casualties.
The 25th April, 1915, marks the day that we remember. We remember our 'diggers', our grandparents, our great grandparents and the creation of what has became known as the “ANZAC legend” which has shaped the way we view both our past and our future. For today we remember their bravery, and heroism, a day we 'LIV' because of them. To 'LIV' each and every moment like it was special and to never give up.
