#530 Forlorn

My original article to go with this picture has now changed, my intention was to write about why we feel so forlorn sometimes. However, due to what has occurred in France the past few days, I wanted to share with you my thoughts.

Most people in the world have freedom of speech that is the right to express opinions and ideas freely.  People often use that freedom by writing newspapers, magazines, or blogs. However words and images may sometimes upset others.

Whilst we were still recovering from the gunmen that attacked people who worked for a French magazine called Charlie Hebdo, killing at least 10 workers at the office in Paris, France. They also killed two police officers. The attackers were angry that the magazine had printed cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed. It is against the rule of the Islam religion to show his image. Across the planet, millions of people showed their support for the magazine. Many held pens and pencils in the air to represent that a free press is essential. Others carried signs that said “Je suis Charlie.”

Did you know that recently the French ban on face covering (French: Loi interdisant la dissimulation du visage dans l'espace public, "Act prohibiting concealment of the face in public space") is an act of parliament passed by the Senate of France on 14 September 2010 and was confirmed in late 2014, resulting in the ban on the wearing of face-covering headgear, including masks, helmets, balaclava, niqābs and other veils covering the face in public places, except under specified circumstances. The ban also applied to the burqa, a full-body covering, if it covers the face.

On a night when thousands of Paris residents and tourists were reveling and fans were enjoying a soccer match between France and world champion Germany, horror struck in an unprecedented manner. Terrorists -- some with AK-47s, some reportedly with bombs strapped to them – attacked a rock concert where over hundreds of people were killed by at least 3-4 gunman.

Countries around the world were shocked at what had happened. In solidarity we shared the horror together, mourning the hundreds that were killed. We updated our Facebook pages to be red, white and blue, The Eiffel Tower was clocked in red white and blue, even so much as the Opera House in Australia.
Over the weekend French warplanes pounded the Islamic State (IS) group’s stronghold in Syria’s Raqa destroying a command post and a training camp. I have to ask, whilst I feeling so forlorn at the tragedy that occurred, was the airstrikes necessary? I understand an eye for an eye, but isn’t there another way to weed out the terrorists..  ??? (Food for thought).
